BOMB THREAT HOAX - TROUBLE FOR OFF THE CUFF REMARK An incident in the Departure Lounge at Stansted Airport last week resulted in the arrest and caution for 19 year old Spanish National, Janet Gomez under the Public Order Offence. Along with 25 year old Nicole Herrera, who was later released with no further action, the couple managed to cause an official security alert at the airport and no chances were being taken by the Essex and an immediate search of the terminal was effected. A passer by overheard comments alluding to a possible aircraft being blown up. The two women were arrested on suspicion of making a hoax bomb threat and as a result caused flight delays.		CORRUPT AIRPORT STAFF - Essex Police Increase Security to track stolen items. Essex Police report that Operation Bruno has been building intelligence over the past 2 years on individuals working at Stansted who steal from passengers travelling through the Airport. It is reported that many people have come forward with information assisting police in tracking down the culprits concerned. Over the past 6 months, 9 people have been arrested throughout Essex who are employed by airport comapnies. The individuals are bailed to return in January. 12 warrants were obtained in Essex for the recovery of electronic equipment, cameras, cigerettes, mobile tepehones and IPods to name but a few of the stolen merchandise. Baggage Handling companies based on the airport have been very supportive and have co-operated fully as they have general views that employment is a place of trust and any criminal acts will not be tolerated and working along side Essex Police, these companies are routing out those responsible. Essex Police advise that this is just the start and warn thieves - steal at your peril. The aim of the Police is to change the culture othersie the problem will continue to grow. DS Vic Murphy advised "we must nip this in the bud, albeit already large. No matter how minor the crime, arrests till be made". Names of those already arrested were not available but suspension of employment and possible loss of jobs is on the cards for them. The theft from baggage problem is one of the main aspects of the Crime Investigation team’s efforts to bring the crime rates down and catch all “bad apples” and put them where they belong – behind bars. DS Murphy said: “We take this very seriously indeed. We aim to seek out, arrest and charge all who are guilty, which WILL result in a prison spell even for first offenders”. The majority of workers who have access to the baggage system are hard working honest individuals there to earn a living, and the crime being carried out by the minority jeopardises their future employment. With handling contracts due to be reviewed, it is imperative that these culprits are caught and brought to justice before contracts and jobs are lost. ESSEX POLICE AWARD FOR SAFER CAR PARKS
Essex Police recently received an award for Safer Car Parks at Stansted Airport. The presentation was held at the Radisson SAS, Stansted Airport and was the Award was accepted by Supt. Michelle Dunn, Divisional Commander of Essex Police. Supt. Dunn expressed that she was pleased that the two sites had taken the step to ensure they upheld the high security standards as required by the Safer car Aprkis Award, to ensure that the airport remains a safe place in which to use and work. Supt. Dunn advised that it is essential that businesses work in partnership with the police and BAA to make it one of the safest in terms not only of terrorism but also for crime. Hiring a car at Stansted Airport using your fingerprint Customers wishing to hire a vehicle at Stansted Airport will now be asked to provide their fingerprint in an attempt to assist Essex Police crack down on crime. Prints will be stored by the car hire companies and handed over to the Essex Police if the car is stolen or involved in any type of crime. DS Vic Murphy, of Essex Police based at Stansted Airport, advised that the scheme is aimed at criminals who use car hire companies and provide false ID and credit cards.
